MARYAM AND LAM

September 30, 2018

It should have been "Cam and Maryam" but I could not draw a furry pet to look like a baby camel, so, meet "Lambie" or "Lam" for short. I have always been fascinated with the Bedouin way of life. It is easy to view a nomadic life traversing Arabian desert on camel backs with everything you have in a caravan of a dozen or more camels, goats and sheep in your wake to be wild, exotic and romantic. But these once primary inhabitants of the Holy Land (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were believed to be Bedouins)*, lived harsh lives which made them resilient, resourceful and strong. Modern times have changed the lives of the desert people. There are few nomads anymore. By the end of the 20th century they made up less than 1 percent of the populations of the nations where they lived. Their demise was accelerated by the creation of nation states in the 1950s and the oil wealth.*

To tenacious little Bedouin girls who made the journey with their parents and family in rugged territory and way of life, this is for you!
